What is a cross-border fee?
An extra ~1.5% the card schemes charge when the card's issuing country differs from the merchant's — on top of the normal rate.
How to avoid FX fees?
Take payment in the customer's currency (multi-currency Stripe account) or use Wise/Payoneer — PayPal's 2.5% FX spread is the worst.
