Sage 50 Integration

Sage 50 Accounts has no REST API — that's exactly why half of UK SMB software work exists. We connect it to your e-commerce, CRM and bespoke systems anyway, using the method that fits your setup.

Your Sage 50 Integration Options — Honestly Assessed

Sage 50 Accounts has no REST API. Every route below works — they differ in what they cost, how fast they are, and what happens when you upgrade Sage. Pick with eyes open.

What Breaks When You Upgrade Sage 50

The honest truth about integrating a desktop product: Sage 50's database schema and its SDO COM interface can both change between versions. A minor update (v29 to v30) usually leaves ODBC reads intact; a major upgrade can break an SDO-based integration outright — and the failure tends to surface weeks later as silently missing orders, not as an obvious error.

This is the real reason we recommend the connector service: it isolates your integration from Sage's internals in one place, so a Sage upgrade means one version-tested fix instead of an archaeology project across every script that touches the database.

Whenever you plan a Sage upgrade, we test your integration against the new version before you roll it out — and if a route you're on is about to break, we tell you before you spend the upgrade money, not after.

Orders → Sage

Web orders auto-posted as Sage sales orders/invoices with correct tax codes, nominals and customer records — no re-keying.

Sage → everything else

Stock levels, prices, customer balances and invoice status pushed to your site, CRM or dashboards on a schedule or near-real-time.

Safe writes

Every write goes through validation, idempotency and a full transaction log — you can trace every record back to its source event.

Sage 50 Integration FAQ

Does Sage 50 have an API?+

Not a REST/JSON API — Sage 50 Accounts is a desktop product. Integration options are the SDK (SDO — the official COM toolkit), SData (Sage's older web protocol, v23+), direct database reads via ODBC (read-only), or flat-file import/export. Each has trade-offs in reliability, speed and version support.

What's the most reliable way to integrate Sage 50?+

For most projects: a small connector service installed on the Sage machine that talks SDO locally and exposes a modern HTTPS endpoint outward. Your web apps call a normal API; the connector handles Sage's desktop quirks. For read-only needs, ODBC/SQL views on the Sage data directory are simpler still.

Can you do real-time sync with Sage 50?+

Near-real-time — SDO calls are single-threaded and desktop-bound, so we queue and serialize requests. Orders appear in Sage in seconds; bursts are queued rather than dropped. True real-time isn't technically possible with Sage 50's architecture, no matter what the brochure says.

Do we need the Sage developer program?+

No — we hold the SDK licences for development work. You need nothing beyond your normal Sage 50 installation and a dedicated Sage user for the integration.

Will our Sage version be supported?+

We support all MTD-compliant versions, v24 through current. Older versions can usually still be integrated via ODBC or flat-file methods.

How much does a Sage 50 integration cost?+

It depends on scope. Read-only reporting and dashboards: roughly £2,000–£5,000. One-way sync (e.g. web orders into Sage with correct tax codes and nominals): £5,000–£12,000. Two-way, multi-system builds: £15,000+. We quote fixed prices after a scoping call — no hourly billing — and we'll tell you when an off-the-shelf connector is the cheaper answer.

Should I integrate Sage 50 or upgrade to Sage 200 first?+

Rule of thumb: if you're hitting Sage 50's limits — multiple companies, transaction volume, multi-user lock contention — or you need a proper REST API, upgrade first. Integrating a Sage 50 install you're about to outgrow is money spent twice. If the current version serves you fine, integrate now; a well-built connector carries over to Sage 200 concepts later.

Can Sage 50 connect to WooCommerce, Shopify or my website?+

Yes — it's the most common ask. Web orders post into Sage as sales orders/invoices with correct tax codes, nominals and customer records, while stock levels and prices push back out to the store. See our Sage e-commerce integration page for platform-specific detail.
